Exploring Jakarta’s Unique Space of Religious Tolerance

In the heart of Jakarta, on the north eastern corner of Mardeka Square, one can find a reprieve from election tensions surrounding religious tolerance.

Istiqlal Mosque, the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world, stands proudly across the street from the old Catholic Jakarta Cathedral.

These two places of worship co-exist harmoniously as a physical manifestation of Indonesia’s religious tolerance and diversity.
