Puppies Descend on UQ’s Natural Amphitheatre
On Wednesday the 22nd of August the University of Queensland played host to the 2018, Puppies & Pancakes event.
The event which was organised by the UQ Union (UQU) Student Rights Collective, was aimed at providing students a chance to relax during Stress Less Week.
Currently Stress Less Week is only in during semester two; however, it is hoped that next year it will run across both semesters.
Paul Taylor, a UQU Student Rights vice-president, said the event was aimed at reminding students that there is a life beyond university and their studies.
“It’s important to take care of yourself, cause in the long term it actually helps you as a student,” Mr Taylor said.
Taylor went on to say that the event also aimed at raising awareness about the different organisations that students can turn to if they need help, including Headspace.
This event isn’t the only event aimed at helping students relax though, during SWOTVAC, the Student Rights Collective has exam support stalls running from 8pm to midnight. The exam support stalls offer students a range of things they might need during the stress filled week, such as pancakes, tea, coffee, and even free stationery.
“We can’t stop students from studying late, but what we can do is provide some support,” Mr Taylor said.
In addition to the SWOTVAC exam support stalls and the Puppies and Pancakes event, the UQU Student Rights Collective offers drug awareness workshops. Taylor explained that they acknowledge that students may try drugs, and that they can’t prevent that, so they just want to make sure students are informed about the risks.
Headspace was also present at the event with their therapy dog.
