Unity in Diversity: Exploring Fatahillah Square

In the 16th century, a commander for the Sultanate of Demak named Fatahillah recaptured the Old Town of Jakarta from the Portuguese.

Fatahillah remains a national hero  in Indonesia and his name has become synonymous with multiculturalism, through the Old Town meeting place of Fatahillah Square.

Indonesia’s national motto ‘Bhinneka Tunggal Ika’ – Unity in Diversity – is reflected in this multicultural centre, as Sophie Volker reports.
