Sea cleaning in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is one of the most populated places on Earth, and it is also one of the world’s largest financial centres. It has a population of more than 7.4 million people who live in an area of just 1,104 square kilometres. Hong Kong produces 15,000 tons of municipal waste per day. And more than a quarter of waste is dumped into the ocean.
I first joined the sea cleaning society as a school activity. Why did I make this decision?
When I was seven years old, I first went back to Hong Kong. Our family was invited to a boat party. There were drinks and food, and this produced a lot of rubbish. I saw people dumping plastic dishes, tableware, and drink cans into the water while they were finished, and there were multiple ships in the area. Imagine every ship doing the same thing and how much waste will be thrown into the sea daily. Plastic bags and cans were floating on the sea. And this action makes me feel disappointed. Hong Kong residents give me a bad influence.
I live near the seaside, so it is convenient for me to jog daily. The wind and the fresh air always make you feel perfect. But you can always smell the waves of stink, and I didn’t know that in the first few months. Then one day, I started jogging in the morning, and now I know why there was a stink near the seaside. There were multiple water pipes linked to the buildings, which meant the infected water was discharged directly to the river, which was linked to the oceans. There were even tons of garbage floating down the river. I’ve never seen this before in Canada or another country. How come there were some unsustainable designs for polluting their own city, and how come no one cares about the environment where they live?
The animals were underwater. Their environment was infected. Imagine you were living in a landfill, and you were helpless. The waste was even threatening your life.
People on Earth were self-centred. This popped into my mind when I saw all these inhuman and unethical actions. After all this, there was a change in school. A company came to my high school and gave a talk on a topic related to sea pollution, and they provided an opportunity for the students to recognize what humans are doing to the sea. It is a valuable lesson to me that humans should get more education about sustainability. This could make them live longer and protect the Earth as well.

After all these similar activities, you will never forget. It fulfils your guilt. You will always realize how humans treat their earth and how sustainability education is important. Also, you can meet a group of non-selfish humans. It makes your life better with a better environment and a better personality.
